But nearly a dozen years later, they find themselves running against each other for the GOP presidential nomination. Haley and Scott are forever linked by that announcement at the South Carolina Statehouse on a winter day in 2012, cementing their status as rising stars in a Republican Party frustrated by Barack Obama’s reelection just a month earlier. Scott was just as effusive, praising Haley as someone who governed with “conviction” and “integrity.” He pledged to “get on the team with Nikki Haley to make sure that all of America continues to hear the great things about South Carolina.” And so it was with that, that I knew he was the right person.” “He is very aware that what he does and every vote he makes affects South Carolina and affects our country. “This man loves South Carolina,” Haley said of Scott, a congressman at the time. In other respects, though, this wartime world is, of course, in no way normal, and that is both a problem and an opportunity for William. William Does His Bit is, of course, set in the usual Brown family world in many respects – Mr Brown is generally as impatient of William’s foibles as usual, as are Robert and Ethel, his older brother and sister, while Mrs Brown is somehow more patient but not necessarily fully in tune with William’s inner world. I somehow started by reading the Just William first, so I shall write about that first. I enjoyed reading both very much, though in the end I have a reservation about Weatherley Parade – and none about William Does His Bit. In fact, I didn’t quite succeed in that, but at least they are both nineteen-forties / wartime books. I know we were meant to be reading a Richmal Crompton book for adult readers, but I couldn’t resist the treat of reading a Just William at the same time, so am going to justify this (to myself anyway) by saying that I wanted to compare a Just William and a grown-up Richmal Crompton from the same year. 6/28/2023 0 Comments The dreamers karen thompsonThe book has been on my TBR shelf since last summer, yet I kept putting it off, prioritizing my kindle TBR list. The death of her babies affects Hattie for the rest of her life and colors her relationships with her other nine children and one grandchild. The twins tragically die of pneumonia, a condition that could have easily been treated had there been access to doctors and hospitals. The story introduces readers to the children of Hattie, beginning with her twins, a boy named Philadelphia and a girl named Jubilee, born to her when she was 17 years old. In her first novel, “The Twelve Tribes of Hattie,” Mathis takes her readers deep into the life of Hattie Shepard, a young woman who was a part of the “Great Migration” that took place after World War I as African-Americans from the South fled to the North to find jobs and better lives for their families. Fortunately, for debut author Ayana Mathis, the endorsement brings to much deserved attention. When media giant Oprah Winfrey chooses a book to endorse, it usually means immediate success for the book, and subsequently, the author. |
